ANURAG GOEL
Anurag is a career civil servant turned Futurist and Governance Architect. He has been advising UN agencies, governments, corporates, academia and mentoring NGOs/ start-ups for the last 8 years, after 42 years plus very successful & much awarded service in Governments of India and Uttar Pradesh, and as a competition regulator.
Anurag Goel joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1972. He served in Government of India in 6 Ministries including Home, Civil Aviation, Health, Finance and Corporate Affairs, and in various assignments in the State of Uttar Pradesh, including as Principal Secretary to then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh.
He received a number of awards during his service period, including the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration (being the highest award for civil servants in India), and National Citizens Award. He was Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, GoI and ex-officio Member, SEBI Board, for more than three years (2006-09), and on retirement took up the assignment of Member, Competition Commission of India (CCI) for five years. He has long experience of the corporate world, from the government/ regulatory perspective as also as a director on a large number of boards.
As Secretary, Corporate Affairs Anurag conceived and executed the plan to save Satyam Computers Ltd, one of India's largest I.T. companies, after a US $1.50 billion fraud by the promoters, without any government bail out. This globally unique success in saving a company hit by a major fraud won international acclaim, with him being called "The Saviour of Satyam". He also conceived and set up the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, and led GOI’s first successful major/ flagship e-governance program MCA-21, and introduced an entirely new, efficient, futuristic system for companies to engage with the Government.
Anurag Goel set up "Shaping Tomorrow Consultants LLP" in end 2014, and moved deeply into devising technology based governance reforms and corporate strategies to help shape a better future. Shortly thereafter, he became Adviser to Govt of Assam ( AASC), for a whole-of-government initiative through implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and created the world’s first Model and Strategic Architecture for this purpose. This led to Jeffrey Sachs, Special Adviser to UN Secretary General, saying that Assam was leading the world inSDGs. UN Agencies quoted Assam Government's SDG initiative to other States, and many of them adopted the Model, which also influenced Govt. of India’s strategy.
Anurag has advised, and been deeply engaged with, multiple other agencies and institutions also since 2014, including as Adviser to UNDP, project leader for Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI, Senior Fellow IIM, Kashipur, Adviser, Centre for Responsible Business, Member of FICCI’s Committees, Adviser, CSIR Institute for Genomics & Integrative Biology ( IGIB) etc., apart from mentoring some start-ups. Department of Science & Technology appointed him as Chairman of the Working Group for the Rs 3,500 crore Mission for Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Sciences (2020-21). He has been Adviser to IIT, Jodhpur since mid-2019, partnering in multiple innovative initiatives including development of a future-driven Vision & Strategy 2021-25, setting up of new Centres etc, and is working closely with the Institute of Directors as a Distinguished Fellow. He continues to be deeply involved in use of Strategic Foresight and exponential technologies for future-ready governance, corporates and academia.
